Founder’s Day is a Girl Scout Holiday where we celebrate the founder of Girl Scouts: Juliette Gordon Low.
On Founder’s Day, we celebrate Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthday, Oct 31. Not to be confused with the Girl Scout Birthday on March 12 which celebrates the first Girl Scout meeting. Many GS troops and service units celebrate Founder’s Day with a birthday party event, sometimes with a mix of Halloween costumes.
Tons of great info is available right on the GSUSA website - I found most of my notes from their website at girlscouts.org. Many councils also have a team of historians, so check out what resources your local council might have.
As you listen to this episode, you'll learn so many fun facts, like...
Juliette’s nickname, which may sound familiar
When and how Juliette started Girl Scouts
What's the connection with the Boy Scouts, anyway?
Why rice was likely not Juliette's favorite food
How Juliette got the money to start the Girl Scouts
How truly important Girl Scouts and the well-being of girls was to Juliette
Ways to celebrate!
Kim’s Game. This is a memory game. Girls are allowed to view a variety of items on a tray for a limited amount of time. Typically 20-60 seconds. When time is up, the tray is covered or taken out of sight. The, the girls write down as many items as they can remember. The person who remembers the most correct items wins. Around Founder’s Day, the items on this tray include things important in the Juliette Gordon Low life. Listen in the podcast to play a twist of this game with Stacie!
Golden Eaglet Movie Night. This Girl Scout silent movie from 1918 is about 20 min long. I would recommend this movie for girls Juniors and up. You can view it on GSUSA’s Youtube Channel.
Headstand Contest - or maybe a learning session. Did you know that one of Juliette’s special skills was standing on her head? It’s true! She stood on her head every year on her birthday to prove she could still do it! Grab some gym mats and give it a try. Make it a game, she would love you to have a silly day, and I have a feeling it will end in a lot of giggling.
And don’t forget to get our Last Minute Event Checklist. If you have a Founder’s Day event, or really any event, it is a nice list of reminders to make sure you are ready for your big day.
